A pre-dawn summit push from the Pindaunde lakes, up through cloud forest and alpine grass, to watch sunrise over the Bismarck Range.
Mount Wilhelm is Papua New Guinea's highest peak at 4,509 m, on the border of Chimbu, Madang and Western Highlands provinces. The standard route climbs from Keglsugl through montane forest to the glacial lakes at Piunde and Aunde, then makes a pre-dawn push up the ridge to reach the summit for sunrise, when both coasts can be visible.
Fly Port Moresby to Goroka or Mount Hagen, then drive to Kundiawa and on to Keglsugl village at about 2,500 m, the roadhead for the climb.
